Rosette, a Richmond-based string quartet, is joined by dance artist Kevin LaMarr Jones for a performance of Fodé Lassana Diabaté's piece, Sunjata's Time. This is the third of six performances of this same program during the month of October as part of Rosette's So Hot Right Now series, a concert series which highlights the work of one very hot, very alive composer. So Hot Right Now began in 2021, and Fodé Lassana Diabaté is the sixth composer to be featured on the series. A virtuoso balafon player, Diabaté lives in Mali where he is the leader of Trio Da Kali, a group of Malian griots whose aim is to bring back forgotten repertoires and styles of the Mande griot tradition.
Sunjata's Time is a 5-movement work that is dedicated to Sunjata Keita, the warrior prince who founded the Mali Empire in the 13th century. The piece was commissioned by the Kronos Quartet for their Fifty for the Future project. Rosette's performance, featuring Kevin LaMarr Jones, will last approximately 45 minutes.
