When I Say Poetry You Say Rocks: A Spoken Word Writing Workshop (pt 1)

Led by Regie Cabico
Two dates: June 1, 2024 and June 2, 2024
Sign up for one or both dates.

June 1, 5:00 pm, Open Mic 8:30-11:30 pm

We will share our glimmers, the things that calm and delight us, to create poetry. We will construct group poems and create tiny poems by combining adjectives and concrete nouns inspiring lines of gleeful surprise. We will look at the poems of Andrea Gibson, Joy Harjo, and Yesika Delgado and culminate with composing an I Am poem. This 2-part workshop explores poetry's tiniest form and builds to composing fuller performative slam poems. We will examine what is spoken word slam poetry and its relationship to the poem as we understand it as poets. This workshop fosters a positive and nurturing space allowing poets of all levels and styles to explore new ways of channeling their powerful and resilient selves on the page and the stage.  Participants are encouraged to attend both workshops but may choose to register for the workshop of their choice.

Regie Cabico is a spoken word pioneer having won The Nuyorican Poets Cafe Grand Slam. Mr. Cabico was a featured poet at the 2022 Whitney Biennial and received the 2006 Writers for Writers Award from Poets & Writers.  He is a lead teaching artist at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.  He received three New York Innovative Theater Award Nominations for his work in Too Much Light Makes The Baby Go Blind and three New York Foundation for the Arts Poetry and Multidisciplinary Performance Fellowships.  His children’s show, Mangos to Apples Tumbling Tumbling From a Filipino Rainbow, premiered at the National Theater in Washington, DC.  Mr. Cabico is the author of A Rabbit in Search of a Rolex: Parables, Hyperboles & other Fantasias (Day Eight, 2023)

This workshop is made possible by The Virginia Commission for the Arts, Artspace, and Slam Richmond.
