Up Against the Wall Moments: Writing & Spoken Word Poetry Workshop

Led by Regie Cabico.
Part one of two dates:
Pt 1 July 13 and Pt 2 August 3, 2024.

We will use improvisation to pull out our moments of drama and triumph in writing our biographical poems. We will look at the works of Shanturo Tanikawa, and Yesika Delgado to channel our resilient selves. We can share our stories in a nurturing space. We will also examine elements of performance vocal phrasing, pausing, and listening to find the difference between performing a poem and reading a poem.

Regie Cabico is a spoken word pioneer having won The Nuyorican Poets Cafe Grand Slam. Mr. Cabico was a featured poet at the 2022 Whitney Biennial and received the 2006 Writers for Writers Award from Poets & Writers. He is a lead teaching artist at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. He received three New York Innovative Theater Award Nominations for his work in Too Much Light Makes The Baby Go Blind and three New York Foundation for the Arts Poetry and Multidisciplinary Performance Fellowships. His children’s show, Mangos to Apples Tumbling Tumbling From a Filipino Rainbow, premiered at the National Theater in Washington, DC. Mr. Cabico is the author of A Rabbit in Search of a Rolex: Parables, Hyperboles & other Fantasias (Day Eight, 2023)

This workshop is made possible by The Virginia Commission for the Arts, Artspace, and Slam Richmond.
