Husband and wife duo Alan Biller and Sara Bouchard combine traditional musical forms with experimental electronics and everyday objects to create improvised sonic environments. Drawing on their backgrounds in jazz, classical, and folk music, they build lyrical melodies that ebb and flow amidst percussive elements including natural objects and wind-up toys.
Michael McNeill, Adam Hopkins, and Scott Clark have played as part of quite a few groups together since meeting soon after McNeill and Hopkins arrived in Richmond. They have talked many times about playing trio, and until now it hasn't happened. Michael will be spending some time outside of Richmond starting in June, so this might be the only time to catch this group for a while! It's sure to go to outer space, and we're very much looking forward to making music together.
Sara Bouchard is a multidisciplinary artist, singer/songwriter and composer working at the intersection of song and the landscape. Born in Stockton, CA, she received her BA in painting from Yale University in 2003. She was subsequently based in Brooklyn, NY, for 13 years where she embedded herself in her local community through socially engaged art practices and American roots music. In 2017 she relocated to Richmond, VA, to study with sound artist Stephen Vitiello, receiving her MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2019. She has exhibited and performed internationally, including at The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum (Ridgefield, CT), The Center for Book Arts (NYC), The American Folk Art Museum (NYC), Third Practice Electroacoustic Music Festival (Richmond, VA) and the 2023 International Conference for Live Coding (Utrecht, Netherlands.) She is currently an Adjunct Professor in VCU’s Kinetic Imaging & Sound program.
Alan Biller considers himself to be a recovering jazz guitarist and bassist. He has lived and performed in NYC, Montreal, Washington DC, and Richmond, VA as part of their lively jazz scenes. He has performed worldwide with the Capital Focus Jazz Band, playing at the French Quarter Festival in New Orleans, the Old Sacramento Dixieland Jazz Jubilee, and the Ascona Jazz Festival in Ascona, Switzerland. He also spent several months performing on Carnival Cruise Lines and lived to tell about it. He has studied with such famous (and infamous) jazz greats as Bruce Arnold, Mordy Ferber, Ron McClure, Martin Wind, and George Garzone. He received his BMus from NYU. These days, he is just trying to make his guitar sound like anything but a guitar, with varying levels of success.
