Artist Statement: Martha Prideaux
My work uses oil paint mixed liberally with cold wax medium to create surfaces that evoke a weathered, organic, or historic feeling. The beginning is process-driven and then as the surface develops, I think of a fleeting memory, place, and/or feeling that helps guide the painting to a compositional resolution. I feel that imposing structure or form on the randomly created surface creates paintings that are existential and explore the effects, limitations, and power of human choice.

Biography:
Martha Prideaux is a mixed media abstract expressionist artist who divides her time between Richmond, VA and Beaufort, NC. She is known for using cold wax medium mixed with oil paint to create work that suggests the passage of time. Her work often incorporates drawing, collage, and other mixed media techniques. She is an adjunct faulty member of the Studio School at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.
