Artist Statement:
This series of artworks is inspired by feelings of love and progressive loss for my mother and her sisters. My deceased Mother and Aunts were role models that gave me guidance on inner/outer beauty, female achievement in male dominated society, and challenges of motherhood. Their resilience is captured in the works along with aspects of fragility related to their declining abilities and passing. These works are attempts to navigate my love for these women I have revered. Two have been stricken with Alzheimer's, one is in resident care due to brain injury, the eldest is suffering from mental limitations leaving her isolated.

I felt compelled to represent these matriarchs with lace dresses, satin gowns, and ribbons. I sculpt the pieces using medical tape, bandages and pins - mementos of pain and care. Finally, I adorn the misshapen forms with silk bows. The works convey contrarian themes of fragility, pain, healing, comfort and beauty. I have seen these women fight against traditional expectations to become leaders, educators and caregivers and now am also saddened to lose contact with them as time separates us. These sculptures are a reflection on their influence on me as woman, artist and mother.
