Artist Statement: Laurie Hoen
I am a storyteller at heart, making oil paintings that combine elements of still life, landscape, and allegory. My paintings articulate ideas and ask questions that underscore the challenges defining the social and political landscape of contemporary events. I create visual narratives based on the notion that the embodiment of an idea, quality, or feeling in an allegorical character of an animal or bird can cause a flickering of something in the imagination. I weave history, cultural symbolism, social science, and references to current events into my work, inviting interpretation to shift depending on who is looking and how deeply. Without casting judgement, my work asks us to think through tough questions about who we are and who we want to be.
