Hand built ceramics
Kay Franz’ work is hand built using a sculpture clay, Terra sigillata, and ceramic stains for colorants. Her exhibition, Textured Journey, grew directly out of the solitude of the pandemic. Kay says, “I have always been interested in and utilized textures and organic forms but have taken this into a greater depth of detail due to the extra time in solitude.” Each piece in her exhibit is a reflection of her journey attempting to keep an inner peace and a quiet intimacy utilizing her personal relationship with clay.
Kay earned her BFA in Crafts from the University of Georgia in 1973. Over the years, she has shown in several local and regional galleries. Franz is a member of numerous arts organizations in Virginia and elsewhere.
