ABOUT THE JUROR:
Miguel Carter-Fisher.
Miguel Carter-Fisher is currently based in his hometown, Richmond, Virginia. His interest in the arts began as a child and was nurtured by his father, the late painter Bill Fisher. There he studied traditional drawing, painting, and composition techniques. After graduate school, he worked at Soho Art Materials, where he educated artists, collectors, and galleries on diverse methods and materials of painting.

Miguel was also an assistant professor and the studio arts coordinator at Virginia State University. He is currently an assistant professor at Virginia Commonwealth University.
Miguel’s work has been exhibited at various galleries throughout the United States and abroad. For more information on Miguel visit MiguelCF.com
Juror’s Statement:
Most would agree that family is essential, but many would disagree on its definition. What is it to be a part of a family? Who inhabits this community? Are these relationships chosen or are we born into them? How has family changed historically? How has family changed personally? And what do we do when it is absent? These questions are among many we wish to reflect upon in Artspace’s upcoming exhibition, Family.

Special Selection by the Juror: Andras Bality, “Post Cotillion Origami Lesson,” 34 x 30 inches, oil on canvas, 2023.
Bality’s work is a prominent part of the ChildSavers art collection; they have several large significant pieces of his displayed in their building. Miguel Carter-Fisher became aware of the painting shown while he was developing the show and reached out to Andy who was happy to provide it for display during the exhibition.
Artist’s Statement:
Being influenced by American painters Alex Katz and Fairfield Porter, when I was younger, I always admired how they both could make great paintings which depicted their children at various stages of their lives. I liked how one did not have to know the children to like the paintings. Since my kids were little I have attempted to include them often as subject matter. My policy usually is, if it does not sell in a show, I keep the piece. This painting depicting my son Branko in his formal Cotillion clothes, giving his sister Kinga a late night Origami lesson as a subject matter spoke to me and seemed to reflect so much about the beauty and love of growing up in a loving family. Something which eludes so many of our children, which is why ChildSavers as an organization is so important, for all of us, in helping children get back on track….to learning and loving in a safe place.
