Description of our Physical Space
Artspace is located in a brick and mortar store front with 3000 sq. ft. of space divided into two main sections.
The front section is reserved for scheduled exhibitions which are selected by the Exhibition Committee for each exhibition season. The front exhibition space is 55 feet, 8-7/8 inches in length by 26 feet, 5-1/4 inches wide. The ceiling is 9 foot 8 inches. Six movable walls are used to segment the space into separate galleries for individual shows. Each section of movable wall is 8x4x2 feet.
Restrictions on frequency of shows:
Artspace's artist members are eligible to show in groups of 4 or less once every 18 months.
Non-members are eligible to show in groups of 4 or less once every 48 months.
There is no restriction on how often an artist may participate in group shows of 5 or more.
Work exhibited should have been completed within the last 5 years of exhibition date unless the proposal is for a retrospective.
Proposals may be made for individual, group, or joint shows. Joint shows are exhibitions for two artists with inter-related works who intend for their works to be shown together in the same designated gallery. Artists or curators may apply for group shows. Full-time students are not eligible to apply for individual or joint shows.
PLEASE NOTE: Proposers may indicate suggested co-exhibitors (those who exhibit during the same month, but in a different gallery), if any, with whom they would like to share the same month, but the final decision rests with the Exhibition Committee. Decisions are based on numerous factors, including size and number of works, compatibility of subject matter, style, and media (for co-exhibitor designation).

All artists who have been selected for exhibition at Artspace must observe the following guidelines in presenting and hanging their show. The purpose of the guidelines is not to enforce uniformity, but to create an aesthetic consistency and a professional atmosphere of quality and attention to detail. We recognize that, depending on the nature of the works exhibited, certain guidelines may not apply. If you anticipate that your show will require departure from the guidelines, you must discuss this with the Artspace Exhibition Committee before hanging the show. If you seek guidance on hanging the show, feel free to contact your Artspace Liaison or Artspace's Exhibition Committee for suggestions. The art works presented must be consistent in nature and in quality with the works presented in the exhibition proposal. If, in Artspace's sole judgment, they are not consistent, Artspace reserves the right to cancel that artist's show. Artspace also reserves the right to cancel the exhibition if, in its judgment, the guidelines below have not been followed. Cancellation may occur as late as the day the show is scheduled to open.
1. Uniqueness of Show. Part of Artspace's mission is to bring new work to the area, not work previously shown. The body of work in the exhibition must be work that has not been previously exhibited in Richmond or the Greater Richmond Metropolitan Area. Work exhibited should have been completed within the last 5 years of exhibition date unless the proposal is for a retrospective.
2. Gallery Fee. No fees to exhibit. $35 application fee required to apply.
3. Insurance. Artspace’s insurance policy provides a maximum of $50,000 ($250 deductible) for property damage to artwork. Value is determined by records of previous sales of the similar artwork by the artist. Should damage occur, the $250 deductible would be the artist’s responsibility. The remaining value of damaged artwork would be paid to the artist minus commission that the gallery would have received if the work had been sold. This coverage only applies while work is at the gallery. Artspace is not responsible for the cost of shipping work, insurance on work while in transit, or travel expenses associated with exhibitions.
4. Artspace Liaison. Each show is assigned an Artspace Liaison who is a member of Artspace. The Liaison is available to answer questions at any time after you have been placed on Artspace's exhibition schedule. When the show is being hung, the Liaison will provide access to the gallery or make arrangements for access.
5. Publicity. Each artist is responsible for submitting publicity information to Artspace for use in publicizing the show. This information will be used for preparing press releases to the local media and for inclusion on the gallery's website, direct emails, and online calendars. Submit images and text to the gallery at artspaceorg@gmail.com. Information and images for publicity are due to Artspace at least two months before the opening. Requested information includes: Show title, short description (one or two sentences) of the theme of the show and/or medium of the artwork, artist statement about the show and/or the artist in general, brief biographical information, at least three (3) high resolution images of artwork that will be on view along with information for each image. High resolution images should be between 2 MB and 5 MB each. Image information should include artist’s name (for group or joint exhibitions), artwork title, medium, size, and year of creation if available.
6. Show Invitation. Artspace will prepare a show card featuring selected artists with images provided by the artists, as long as high resolution images are provided in a timely manner. Artists may request cards for their own personal mail lists. The gallery does not currently mail cards to a list of its own. Exhibiting artists may also produce a show card of their own design at their own expense. Details for show cards: The Artspace logo should appear on the card along with the dates of your exhibition and our address as follows: Artspace, 2833-A Hathaway Rd., Richmond, VA 23225 in the Stratford Hills Shopping Center. Please include the gallery’s phone number, website and email address on the show card. 804-232-6464 / artspacegallery.org / artspaceorg@gmail.com. Gallery hours are 12:00 - 4:00 pm, Tuesday through Sunday. Opening Receptions are held from 6:00 - 9:00 pm (generally on the Fourth Friday of the month). Artist talks for the exhibitors take place on the Saturday following the opening reception at 2:00 pm. Dates and times are subject to change.
7. Information on the Artist. Visitors are often interested in learning more about the artists. Exhibitors are expected to make information about themselves available for visitors. This may be as simple as a resume with current address and phone number or as elaborate as a notebook containing artist's statements, reviews, brochures, lists of other exhibits, etc.
8. Hanging and Taking Down Show. In the Exhibition Contract, each exhibitor is given precise dates for his or her show, the date of the opening and the dates for hanging the show and taking it down. Works may not be removed from the gallery until the end of the show. Work should be removed from the gallery immediately after take-down unless prior arrangements have been made for pick up or return shipping. Any artwork that remains at Artspace after 30 days from the close of the show will become the property of the gallery.
9. Presentation of Artwork. All artwork must be presented in a professional manner, e.g., any frames, matting, pedestals, etc. must be acceptable to Artspace and must present the works in a manner that is consistent with the artist's exhibition proposal. The installation of work should be secure if hung on the wall and stable if 3-dimensional or an installation to protect the work and visitors to the gallery. Artspace may request that an installation be modified if to avoid damage to work or injury to a viewer. If video is included as part of the exhibition, the artist is responsible for providing the equipment to professionally present the video piece. Most wall hung exhibitions should be displayed centered vertically at 59 inches. Exceptions are allowed for very large pieces. If salon hanging is required for your exhibition, you must have prior approval from the exhibition committee — contact your liaison directly or email the exhibitions committee at: artspaceexhibitions@gmail.com.
10. Price List/Inventory for the Show. Artists are responsible for providing information about all artwork that may be on view in their exhibition. A price list identifying the works by title, size, media and price (NFS if not for sale) should be emailed to the gallery at artspaceorg@gmail.com in .doc format in advance of installation. The gallery will provide a standardized format for the pricelist, confirm the order the artwork is listed matches the order of display on the wall, and make copies for use during the run of the exhibition. Artspace will provide numbers for the wall to identify the work on the price list. Labels can be used for group exhibitions. Please review the format of the labels with the exhibition Liaison.
11. Works for Sale. At least half of the work must be for sale in each show, unless otherwise approved. A price list must be available listing all works shown. If certain works are not for sale, "NFS" may be used. If "POR" (Price on Request) is used, Artspace must be notified of the price for the work prior to the show so that it can respond to a request, if made. The artist must provide an insurance value for all exhibited work including NFS and POR. All artwork that is for sale will be listed on the gallery’s online shop. Prior to the installation of your show, please provide web sized images of each piece that will be for sale, especially if it will be framed behind glass. Also, provide information for each piece of art including artist’s name, artwork title, medium, size, year of creation (if available), and price of artwork.
12. Opening Reception. Artspace will provide a cash bar and food for the opening reception. Exhibitors are expected to attend the opening reception for their exhibition.
13. Artist Talk. The gallery encourages artists to speak about their work. Talks typically take place the day following the opening reception at 2:00 pm. Artists are not required to participate. Please inform your liaison whether you will be available for your artist talk as soon as possible.
14. Gallery Damage. Exhibitions may not damage the gallery. Ordinary wear and tear as a result of the show (e.g., holes in walls for hanging, debris and dirt from installations, etc.) must be repaired by the exhibiting artist immediately after the exhibition is removed. No substances should be applied to the walls or floors of the gallery that may cause damage or difficulty in recovering, especially including: Sharpie or magic markers, oil or enamel paints, oil pastels, spray paints, crayons, Velcro, and most sticky tapes (except tapes specifically designed for use on drywall). Artspace will provide standard materials for repair and clean up.
15. Artspace's Commission. Artspace receives a commission on all sales made as a result of the show, even if they occur after the show. In other words, if the purchaser sees a work in the show at Artspace and decides to purchase it within the three months following the show, Artspace should receive its agreed-upon commission (45% of the sale price for non-member exhibitors; 25% for member exhibitors). Any known violation of this policy will result in the artist's losing future exhibition privileges at Artspace.
16. Costs to Artspace. If the artist's failure to follow any of the above guidelines results in additional expense to the gallery, Artspace will bill the artist accordingly. The artist's full inventory of artwork will not be released to the artist until the bill is paid.
