Biography
After a degree in Philosophy from St. Andrews University, Alice Anne Ellis pursued her art education both in Scotland and in Richmond. Her work references particular occasions and places. She likes the freedom of mixed media, especially the subtly and versatility of ink.
Artist Statement
I realized recently that almost all my work is about either stones or plants or both. They are oddly disparate muses: the soft, delicate and transient; the hard, resilient and primordial. In this exhibition, each group of pieces reflects a particular experience in a place I love.
Currents and Fissures
The Fissure series references the primal quality of rocks and plant life in Hawaii - small ferns sprouting on lava rock still coiled and bubbling as it was in its final moments of cooling. Current Over Lava Rock tells the story of lava reaching the sea. I hope you spot Hawaii’s state fish, the humuhumunukunukuapua’a.
Battlefield Maps
I mingle poppies, poignant motif of remembrance, with an ancient turf maze in England, called Julian’s Bower. On festival days through the centuries, young men would run the maze.
Stone Weights
The stone was shaped 5,000 years ago. Here it is, retired from its purpose, still a thing of beauty. Small stones have always been used to weight the warp threads on a loom.
Standing Stones
The Stones of Stenness and the Ring of Brodgar are in Orkney, off the north coast of Scotland, near one of the most exciting recent archaeological excavations, revealing the biggest known Neolithic settlement in Europe. Stones mapping the stars.
River Bed and River Oats
In my first canoe trip, I couldn’t stop watching the ancient stones slide by under the clear water – a meditation on transience. I discovered river oats the same day, complex seed-heads bobbing on thread-thin stalks.
Nasturtiums
My aunt used to plant nasturtiums. A joyful, easy flower, so splendid and entirely kind.
