Coinciding with Artspace’s 36th anniversary in December, the gallery’s signature biennial members’ show takes place from November 22, 2024, through December 21, 2024.

Emily Smith
Executive Director
1708 Gallery

Curated by 1708 Gallery Executive Director Emily Smith, the aptly named THRIVE! exhibit will display the exceptional creative work of Artspace artists, underscoring Artspace’s deep commitment to supporting arts and education in the greater Richmond region.

For decades Artspace has showcased work by regionally and nationally recognized artists, musicians, and performers, and as part of the gallery’s mission  Artspace artists regularly host a range of community activities, including:

  • Community art days, free and open to all

  • Lively poetry workshops and poetry slams

  • Concert performances by Richmond musicians and composers

  • Hands-on art workshops, artist talks, and more

This biennial show celebrates Artspace’s continuing support of Virginia artists by bringing their vision and talents to all Richmond residents.

Emily Smith is the executive director of 1708 Gallery, a distinguished nonprofit contemporary art space in Richmond. Emily serves on the Board of Directors for Virginians for the Arts and in fall 2023, she was the Bonner Center Community Partner in Residence at the University of Richmond. Previously she served as Curatorial Fellow in Modern and Contemporary Art at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Director of Exhibitions at Piedmont Arts in Martinsville, Virginia, and Assistant Director at Second Street Gallery, in Charlottesville, Virginia. She earned an M.A. in Art History from the University of Virginia in 2002.

Artspace thrives on collaboration as a tool for building a shared future rooted in all our strengths. In light of the recent weather disasters across much of the south, we will be including a fundraising element during this exhibition to help provide relief to artist communities affected by these events.
