What is Artspace?

Mission

Artspace is a nonprofit gallery for the visual and performing arts. Artspace's mission is to support the development of the arts and artists from all backgrounds, through exhibitions, education, and opportunities that create resilient and thoughtful communities through the arts.

What We Believe

Artspace believes that the arts and artists are inherently valuable. We believe that the arts give value to our lives, resilience to our communities, and purpose to our world. We strive to grow and support artists culturally, financially, and educationally, so that they can be fully present in and supportive of their wider communities. This in turn creates a more vibrant and resilient world, through our influence at a local level.

Artspace offers new, challenging contemporary art exhibitions and performances to audiences in the greater Richmond area.

We exhibit high-quality contemporary artwork by established artists and introduce the work of emerging and underrepresented local and regional visual artists in a professional gallery setting.

We also provide a venue for performance artists including poets, writers, and musicians as well as a variety of community art events, classes, and lectures for artists.

Artwork by the gallery’s artist members is presented regularly on-site and at satellite locations, as well. Performance artist members may utilize the gallery space for a performance once per year at no charge, and we offer low rates for access to the space for additional events. Rehearsals can also be scheduled at the gallery for free by performance artist members. Artspace is currently offering free use of the space for events for all gallery members.

Artspace's venue offers artists an opportunity to present their work to the Richmond community, including artwork by more than 100 artists annually. Artspace's exhibition area provides a unique opportunity to customize and divide the room to feature artists or collaborators in their own gallery space configured to the size that is right for each show.

Artspace is a volunteer-run 501(c)(3) organization led by its artist members and supported by community members and volunteers.

Since its move to the Stratford Hills Shopping Center, the gallery has made significant renovations to improve its new space. Artspace’s goals remain focused on the presentation of artwork and performances to the public while seeking to expand its goals to include art-related education and outreach. All contributions will be used to help achieve these goals and are greatly appreciated.

35 Years of Artspace History

Artspace began in 1988 as an association of artists interested in exhibiting their work and providing a space for other artists to reach a wider audience in the greater Richmond, Virginia area. The gallery has been a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit since 1990. From its beginning, Artspace has maintained a gallery committed to showing first quality visual art in a variety of innovative styles and media. The gallery has also been a venue for original work in poetry, prose, drama, dance, and music.

Artspace spent time in a few different locations early on but enjoyed long tenancies in the Manchester District (2004-2020) and, prior to that, on Broad Street, where the gallery was instrumental in originating the First Friday Art Walk there.

During the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the gallery survived by operating out of a remote office space. Then in December 2021, the gallery reopened in its current location 2833_A Hathaway Rd., Richmond, VA 23225 in the Stratford Hills Shopping Center. The gallery is open to the public Wednesday through Sunday from noon to 4 pm and for artists' opening receptions typically on the 4th Friday of each month from 6:00-9:00 pm.
