Black Lives Matter Art Show logo

Artspace is proud to be a partner of the BLM RVA ART 2021 exhibition, beginning on February 1, 2021. Full details for how to access the exhibition are provided here.

The online Opening Event is scheduled for the First Friday in February (5th, 2021) from 7-9 pm. It will be hosted by Daphne Maxwell Reid who will introduce the artists and their artworks. You can RSVP to receive free access to the online Opening event at: blmrva2021.eventbrite.com

The link to the exhibition will be live on Feb 1st to coincide with Black History Month at: sites.google.com/view/blm-rva-art-2021/home

BLM RVA ART 2021 includes 130+ works from 80+ artists. The mission of the show is to gather the community together to combat institutional racism, to champion racial justice, to promote spaces for the black imagination and to celebrate black joy. The artwork will be displayed in six online galleries: Injustice in America, The Black Pastoral, Inspiration and Aspiration, Black Identity, In Memoriam, Black Lives Matter - Uncategorized. There is also an Emerging Voices category for artists under the age of 18. Guest curators, Emily Smith and Francis Thompson, have selected a work from each of the six themes that most exemplify the spirit of that category.

Michael Pierce, one of the organizers of the show, states: "I am proud to be part of an energetic and selfless steering committee who have worked hard during this pandemic to showcase these artists that are creating work that addresses the Black Lives Matter movement. These artists have made moving and important images, but when you visit our site, please also take some time to read their statements. These artworks and their accompanying statements remind of us of our differences as well as our universal connections - through their stories of sadness, grief, fear, pain, horror, rage, joy, beauty, family, memory and ultimately hope."

Artspace is proud to be one of more than a dozen partner organizations (galleries, business, schools, etc.) who have helped spread information about the call for entries and are also sharing information about the online exhibition and the opening event. This exhibition link will remain live for a year and each month there will be an event released on the first Friday via the BLM RVA ART 2021 website. The first Friday event in March will feature interviews with the guest curators and artists. Check the BLM RVA ART exhibition website for future programming.

artspace's Programming & Partnerships Committee keeps the gallery in touch with the community at large.

The committee organizes exhibitions of gallery members' artwork for outside venues, participates in community events and provides exhibitions and meeting space for other local non-profits.
