Joelle Francht Artist Statement

Drawing is my means of communicating a personal perception and reaction to the world, designed to capture those moments which are both poignant and fleeting.

The majority of my body of work centers upon the depiction of the human form. As my subject is often the human form, its encroaching counterpart is the space in which it exists. I create a push and pull relationship between these two elements, often merging and confusing their respective forms, creating an image that derives its power from this harmony. Moreover, I choose only the most striking lines and forms in a subject. I am drawn toward the muscular, bulky and dynamic forms of both subject and its compositional context. Once these elements are decided, I crop images impulsively, with quick and decisive strokes. My larger works tend to differ in this sense due to the additional amount of time given to planning. These works are calmer in a way that is very much derived from the quality of line chosen for more calculated work.

Line quality is always forefront in my mind as I work and it is a tool I use to balance the geometric and organic forms in any composition. Beyond form, line quality adds to a subject's organic or geometric characteristics. At times I exploit this quality to give organic characteristics to geometric forms and visa versa. This aspect of my work is naturally occurring, both intentional and unintentional and dependent upon each piece.

My artwork is also a reflection of artists that have influenced my process and exploration of art- artists such as Toba Khedoori, Tina Barney, William Kentridge, Robert Longo, Egon Schiele, Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud, Whitfield Lovell and even dating back to renaissance masters such as Michelangelo Buonarroti and Leonardo da Vinci.

My subjects are represented in their natural environment, which in turn are interior, or "architecturally compelling" spaces. I often produce large work and use this tendency to manipulate the relationship formed between the viewer and drawing. My art is inspired by what I find most compelling at the time in relation to my subject and my psychological interpretations of that subject.
