About artspace

History + Mission

artspace is an artist-run gallery and performance space committed to showing innovative work by established and emerging artists. Since 1988, artspace has been an intrinsic part of the visual and performing arts community of Richmond, Virginia.

Located in Plant Zero Arts Center in Richmond's Manchester district, artspace mounts eleven new exhibitions every year with opening receptions on Fourth Fridays. artspace's five galleries feature 20 foot ceilings with both track and filtered natural light in a renovated industrial space. The largest gallery accommodates museum-size two- and three-dimensional work, sitespecific installation and video/multimedia. The smallest gallery offers an intimate viewing experience for works in all media. The gallery Shop sells work by artist members and past exhibitors.

Exhibitions open on Fourth Fridays with a reception from 6 to 9 pm. On closing Sundays, Gallery Talks by the exhibiting artists begin at 2 pm. Opening receptions and Gallery Talks are free and open to the public. artspace holds two biennial exhibitions ThinkSmall miniature invitational, and radius250. ThinkSmall exhibits hundreds of works of art no larger than 3 inches by artists from all over. radius250 is a juried event open to artists living and working within a 250 mile radius of Richmond, Virginia.

As a non-profit gallery, artspace's open application process welcomes exhibition proposals from artists and performers. The gallery's mission, to promote the understanding and awareness of contemporary visual and performance art, is made possible by its dedicated artist members and volunteers and through contributions from the public and community.
