Robin Ryder will be showing "Teapots and Other Fun Stuff" in the Main Gallery. This show reflects a long held interest and career in anthropology and archeology. Robin states "I’m interested in material culture- how the stuff we accumulate can take on meaning beyond the original function the objects were designed to serve. I am interested in the role that is played by art and artists in our culture and those of other peoples. I am interested in the way that people create and use simplified or stylized symbols to communicate ideas that are often very complex…" Much exploration of process, color and materials occurs as he pours liquid acrylics and uses airbrushed acrylics to create a desired surface. Physical and conceptual aspects of teapots are explored in this show. In addition to studies in Painting and Printmaking, Robin has a MA in Anthropology from William and Mary and a BS in Anthropology from VCU, 1980. Robin taught in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at VCU and was the Director of the VCU Archeological Research Center for a number of years before retiring in 1998.
