Figures in Abstract
Oil on Canvas
January 23 through February 22
With these paintings, I am concerned with expressing raw, often disconcerting emotions. By focusing on female physical form rather than our traditional stereotypes of feminine beauty, I try to strip away conventional concepts of the female nude. Softer female elements, such as hair, have been removed to concentrate on the expressiveness of figure. My interest is in conveying a moment; the display of personal, compelling reflection.
I choose color to drive the mood; be it aggressive or subtle. I enjoy expression with intense, gripping color; I feel this stimulates sensation, opening the viewer emotionally. I utilize texture variations with paint application to increase contrast between the figure and environment. The surrounding texture is often thick and abstracted further focusing the mood of the particular piece. Rough layering of paint creates energy and movement throughout the background, allowing it to envelope the figure. With this series I use high contrast lighting to intensify emotional tension. I use it as a way to physically show internal struggle; not a particular struggle, but the feeling of struggle. I hope to display the complex, powerful, and often undefined array of emotions within a being. In essence, I strive to convey powerful images which evoke a dynamic emotional response from the viewer. We all struggle, I wish to present it.
